About this event

We are screening the AAPI Voices short film on Tuesday, December 20th from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM CST at the Korean Community Center, 1809 Hollister Street, Houston, TX 77080.

As the School Board of Education voted to delay Asian American Ethnic Studies in K-12 schools this year, we need your support in 2023-2025 to continue the fight.

The stories of Asian Americans throughout history are often neglected during secondary school (K-12). However, the Houston community has taken matters into its own hands by relying on community education.

Our short film highlights the power of community education and storytelling in the Filipino and Vietnamese communities. As an ongoing documentary series, this first installment centers itself on petitioned college courses (Rice University's Asian Studies Courses) and literature for and by the community (Filipino American National Historical Society's Filipinos in Houston) through the connection of oral history narratives at Houston Asian American Archives in the Woodson Research Center.

These are only some of the efforts that surface when institutions fail to disseminate this information, which is critically important. On August 1, OCA-Greater Houston shuttled 50 educators, students, and community organizers to testify at the State Board of Education hearing. The Asian American community, parents, students, educators, and allies have repeatedly expressed their desire to see their stories reflected in textbooks and create a more accurate curriculum of American history.

We would like to acknowledge that the work we are trying to do to push for Asian American Studies would not be possible without the organizing, activism, and hard work of students, teachers, activists, organizers, and community leaders who helped pass Mexican American Studies and African American Studies and opened up possibilities for additional courses in ethnic studies.

We hope this film inspires you to help and advocate with us until every student is reflected in the curriculum.
